Waterloo Global Science Initiative (WGSI) is a non-profit focused on catalyzing collective action to implement the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Canada. Working with partners, WGSI is beginning a pilot project that supports Canadian communities in piloting Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs) on SDG progress that use localized indicators. VLRs, area regional parallel to the Voluntary National Review (VNR), are an emerging process by which sub-national governments can report on their progress on Agenda 2030 and the SDGs.

Powered by Data and the Data Policy Coalition have prepared a written submission, with the aim contributing to the Ontario Government's Data Strategy. The Globe & Mail has released another article from its Data Gap series, this time on six data gaps readers have encountered.

"The Globe’s series identified key areas in Canada in which public data are lacking, such as children’s vaccination rates, eviction rates and measures of how far people drive. The country’s data regime is fragmented for a host of reasons, from outdated legislation to a lack of standardization among provinces, and an aversion to collecting some types of data, such as on race or ethnicity.

Advancements in technology and the Internet have fundamentally changed how people and businesses interact and how they produce, distribute and consume goods and services. As technological advancement continues and digitalization rapidly expands to more segments of the economy, there is an increasing need to accurately measure and assess its impacts.
