The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, a CDP Member Organization, is carrying out the Fort McMurray region’s first official population count since the mass evacuation during the May 2016 wildfire. Socio-economic supervisor Kodjo Efu is leading the effort to figure out how many of the 80,000+ evacuees have since returned. This is the first time that census takers will physically visit Fort Fitzgerald, which reported nine residents in 2015. It is also the first municipal census that accepts transgender identity, which Efu hopes will help with diversity and inclusion planning. CBC Edmonton has more information on the initiative, with a video featuring Kodjo Efu.
