The Canadian Urban Sustainability Practitioners (CUSP) have sent out their November newsletter, which focuses on their newly-launched Energy Poverty and Equity Explorer. From the newsletter:

Uncovering Canada’s Hidden Energy Inequities

Today, the Canadian Urban Sustainability Practitioners (CUSP) network launched the Energy Poverty and Equity Explorer, a powerful new online mapping tool, and a pair of associated primer documents.

Access the materials via our new microsite at energypoverty.ca. (See below for download links and descriptions of these resources.)  Cet outil de cartographie et deux rapports associés sont également disponibles en version francaise.

Equity and energy poverty are emergent issues for policymakers as climate change, housing affordability, poverty, and widening disparities become more pressing challenges across the country.

Until now, policymakers—and others working on climate and social justice—have lacked detailed data about where high energy cost burdens are occurring and who is being unjustly impacted.

The new mapping tool offers unprecedented insights at any geographic scale for the entire country. Along with the initial findings shared in our first two primers, these resources equip policymakers, program designers, advocates and academics with robust and granular data and a shared understanding on the state of energy poverty in Canada—including where it is most acute, who is grappling with it, and what factors are at play.
